France had a great deal of of legendary players among the years, which list includes players like Platini, Trezeguet, Desailly, Henry, Deschamps, Vieira, Thuram, Blanc etc. however in my personal opinion, Zinedine Zidane has been at a very completely different level of play, compared to his co-nationals, throughout his career.
You simply do not see players like Zidane in football nowadays. His football IQ was an anomaly, as he was not fast on the field, but he was always in the right place at the right time. That can only be achieved by having an amazing understanding of the game, and I believe that is how Zidane really stands-out. He was arguably the best technical player of his generation, and 100% had the best first touch of the late 90’s, early 2000’s. He is one of the few players in history whose technical ability I believe could be compared to Messi’s, even though he used to showcase it in a different way.
The position of a midfielder evolved today, and players don't extremely play in Zidane’s position any longer, the method he was needed to play so as to dominate. whereas many folks compare him to Xavi and Iniesta, some believe Xabi Alonso may be a higher player to check Zidane with. The French player would dictate the pace of the sport whenever he was on the sphere, and his ability to search out teammates in tight areas was extremely spectacular.
He wasn’t a prolific goal-scorer, and I feel that is why most football fans underrate his abilities nowadays. He also didn’t have the consistency that Xavi and Iniesta had during their prime years. But on a good day, Zidane was better than 95% of football players that ever touched a football. We don’t have players as elegant as him in modern football, and that is unfortunate. This might come down to the fact that the fast-pace from 2020 doesn’t really allow you to take your time, and have an elegant way of moving the ball down the field.
